My husband had a fried pork dish that was also a little underwhelming. The mains were beef tartare for me, this is a dish that I usually enjoy but the beef was mixed with a similar flavouring to the chicken that we had had at the start and I’m not sure that I really liked it. My husband had the smoked salmon which was very good and we shared a bottle of rose from Provence, it was delicious but quite expensive. My starter was good it was goats cheese ravioli with a beetroot sauce, the ravioli was nice but the beetroot sauce a little bland. ![]() We were offered an amuse-bouche which was some chicken mixed with Italian herbs. We had booked a table and when we arrived the restaurant was fairly full by socially distancing standards. Started well with a drink just off the square. We will eat there again - but will avoid this dish like the plague! More The rice would have made a good dish for a baby! In contrast, my husband's main & our starters were beautifully prepared & presented, on plates, why was my main such a mess? I complained to the waitress, who shrugged, but didn't tell the head waiter, even tho' she brought me some lemon from the bar. There was no sign of any courgettes, & the whole dish cried out for a good squeeze of lemon. To my amazement it arrived in a bowl! The fish was beautifully cooked, but it sat on top of what I can only describe as a gloop (pate visqueuse) of over-cooked rice I was expecting it to arrive on a plate, like all the other mains that evening were served, the fish, a timbale of rice, the courgettes & a small quantity of sauce, separated on the plate. I ordered 'Filet de daurade royale, brunoise de courgettes, riz créole, sauce poivron rouge et crème de coco'. However! on this occasion, I was very disappointed by my main course. We have always been very impressed by a warm welcome, great ambience, beautifully prepared &. It is one of our 3 'must go to' restaurants in St. My husband & I have dined at Le St Charles many times over the last 20 years. The only thing missing was rubbish and junk that you so often find at markets. I do always ask permission to take photos and often have fun banter with stall holders! There were eight rotisserie trucks there I reckon and who can walk past these without wishing to buy and eat? As we were moving on that afternoon, we just bought a rack of ribs (absolutely delicious) and sat on the church step to eat them along with the most amazing pastries. I took a video of the first vege stall we came to the produce was so nice and the presentation equally good, but then there were ten more stalls equally good. A lovely sunny day helps of course, but what stands out is the quality of produce. ![]() We first visited St Omer and this market about five years ago and decided on this holiday from New Zealand we had to go again. This market is worth making a special trip to France for from anywhere.
